Urban legend has it that 7-20-4 cigars were so-named, because R.G. Sullivan, who founded the brand in 1874, got his start in business with the winnings from a lottery ticket with the numbers 7, 20, and 4. However, writer George Franklyn Willey, offered a more plausible explanation in his book, Willey's semi-centennial book of Manchester, 1846-1896, that Sullivan changed the brand's original name, "New Gold Dust Cigars" to "7-20-4," the address of his Manchester, NH cigar factory at 724 Elm Street. The cigars, which sold for 10¢, were hand-made with Cuban tobacco fillers and Sumatra wrappers. The brand was so successful that Sullivan's factory became one of the world's largest manufacturers of handmade cigars. Today, Kurt A. Kendall, an entrepreneur and owner of two New Hampshire cigar stores, always had a fascination for vintage cigar memorabilia. Over the years he built-up an extensive collection of artifacts, and one of his passions was to revive the 7-20-4 cigars brand. So, Kendall acquired the then-defunct trademark, and began reproducing the historic cigars that now rank as one of the best boutique cigars on the market.
Kurt Kendall's 1874 cigar is a sequel to his 7-20-4 line. It was
first launched in 1874. This Nicaraguan cigar is available in
just three sizes and is crafted with a savory blend of Nicaraguan
long-fillers, producing a medium-bodied cigar with smooth notes
of pepper and leather. Due to its earthy-peppery spice and
suppleness, a medium-brown Nicaraguan wrapper was chosen.
With The Hustler from Kurt Kendall and the folks at 7-20-4,
you'll have a striking addition to your collection. An authentic
barber pole wrapper alternates with Ecuador Connecticut and
Brazilian wrapper leaves. Costa Rican binders and Nicaraguan
longfillers provide a medium-bodied combination. Spices and sweet
notes converge in a bold profile of cedar, earth, toast and a
well-balanced finish.
The popular story behind the 7-20-4 cigar brand is that it was
named after founder R.G. Sullivan's lottery ticket with winning
numbers 7, 20, and 4. However, according to George Franklyn
Willey's book Willey's semi-centennial book of Manchester,
1846-1896, Sullivan changed the name from "New Gold Dust Cigars"
to "7-20-4," in connection with the address of his cigar factory
at 724 Elm Street in Manchester, New Hampshire. The 10ยข cigars
were hand-made and unfortunately cannot be shipped into New York.
Keeping The Hustler's signature barber pole design but giving it
a new blend, The Hustler Five & Dime PCA Exclusive pays homage to
the cigars of the past, particularly the 5- and 10-cent cigars
that made the brand famous in its early days.
The 7-20-4 cigars are one of those rare boutique brands you have
to taste in person to fully understand. The cigars are made from
Nicaraguan, Honduran, Mexican, and Colombian long fillers, Costa
Rican binder, and Brazilian Mata Fina wrappers, and are aged
again for 120 days in Spanish cedar boxes to mellow after curing
& aging. 7-20-4's body is upper-to-medium, very smooth, and has a
great aroma and flavor. Try one today and see for yourself!
