What happened to cause life to become so busy? Everywhere you look now people are scurrying here and there, making every minute count, catching planes, driving constantly and rushing to meetings. I have found myself doing the same thing, except for flying which I don’t and will not do. What happened that life was taken away from us and we have become these creatures without nature, people without the ability to stop and breath? Last Saturday I got up and made coffee looking at what I needed to get done for the day, then realized it was Saturday and what was I thinking? It was time to stop for a day and do nothing. My wife made breakfast and afterwards we got coffee and went out to the deck. I took with me a Perdomo ESV 2002 Sun Grown. It’s a beautiful cigar, with construction as you would expect from Perdomo, perfect. The wrapper is even brown with very few veins. The pre light aroma gives hints of dry rye grass cocoa powder and cedar. I clipped the cap and sat down, she and I both talking about how things used to be before life got so active. After torching up, cedar and spice greeted the palate in a wave of flavor, but shortly after, the cigar began giving a velvety feel to the smoke with flavors of cocoa powder and light earth coming in mixing with the spice and cedar.
The first portion of the cigar began showing a very nice complexity soon after lighting as the combination of flavors began edging in which was predominate. Taking a long draw from the cigar, my wife refilled our cups and we wondered about a few things. Years ago, things seemed to be slower for everybody, people had time for visiting, relaxation and lazy afternoons. Does anyone remember when people would sit on their porches on Saturday and Sunday afternoons? What happened to porches anyway, today everyone has decks. I can remember going for walks and as you walked down the road in the afternoon and it took time for almost every house you passed you would stop and chat with people on the front porch. Where my wife grew up in her neighborhood, if you walked around the block, people were out in the back yards, or sitting under the carports. As a whole we need to slow down and take time to breathe again. As we talked, the middle of my cigar was approaching, and the flavors of the cigar were working perfectly. The smoke was picking up sweetness to it with the spice, cedar and cocoa powder continuing. The light earth had vanished and had been replaced with a light espresso and dark roasted nuts. The smoke was beginning to give a silky buttery feel at each easy draw. The cigar is becoming a decadent smoke, with smooth delectable flavors. My wife’s phone rang and she declined to answer it. Once the ringing stopped I asked her about that and she said phones never used to be as important and she is right. Do you remember when the phone would ring in your house and someone would decide who was going to get up to answer it? And if you and your family or friends where outside and it rang, no one ran back inside because if it was important they would call back.
Now we don’t make a move unless our cell phones are right with us. My wife said hold on and she got up and took our phone, walked inside and placed them in a drawer where they stayed for the next four hours. It was a nice change. She let her big bad dog Chico the miniature Chihuahua out to play in the yard while we sat and it felt like years had rolled away. We all have gotten way to busy, too wrapped up in every minute that things and the simplest pleasures in life can pass by un noticed. We need to slow down, take a deep breath and sit on the front porch more. Talk to families and friends, and go for walks. I don’t mean get out the jogging outfit; I mean a walk where you can talk to others. We decided to do just that shortly, as she went to put Chico up I finished my cigar. The final part of the cigar the flavors became bold, with the same combination as the middle but each flavor standing out in turn more delightful. The last of the cigar showed hints of leather with that buttery feel to the smoke continuing. The Perdomo ESV 2002 Sun Grown is a joy to smoke and a delicious cigar. Pick up a few and as always, see what flavors you find.
