Humidors in the Winter

A humidor should be your next best friend if you’re looking to always have your cigars in the best shape. This is the place where cigars can be stored in the right humidity and allowed to mature as expected. Maintaining your humidor is pretty easy.

However, when it comes to the winter season, your humidors will definitely require extra care. This is because, during this season, the relative humidity drops. And, if humidors aren’t winterized, you could end up with dry and shriveled cigars, even when they had been stored in the humidors. Therefore, it’s important that you learn how to winterize your humidor.

Adjusting the Humidity with Crystallized Beads

During the winter season, one of the perfect ways to ensure that your humidor has adequate humidity is by the use of beads. Here you just need to purchase one of those jars containing crystallized beads. Immediately, you open this jar, put it inside your humidor. The beads will help humidify the insides of your humidor, thus keeping your cigars at the right humidity. If you notice that the beads are shrinking, you may add some distilled water to fill the jar.

Adjusting the Humidity with Distilled Water

Another way to recharge your humidor in the winter months is by adding distilled water to your humidor device. This will help add humidity to the device for a period of time. (Note: Never add tap water)

Glass Humidors

For those who own glass humidors, ensure that you don’t store them near cooling or heating vents. The change in temperatures may make it hard for them to maintain the relative humidity levels.

Electronic humidors

Electronic humidors handle seasons better than the passive ones. However, this doesn’t mean that they’re not affected by winter. With these kind of humidors, you’ll need to turn up their settings.

Taking Proper Care of your Cigars

Finally, during this cold season, when getting your cigar into or out of the humidor, don’t leave the lid open for long. Just place or take out your cigar without wasting time and close the humidor. This’ll prevent moisture from escaping from the humidor.

Taking these control measures during the winter season is the perfect way to ensure that your cigars are well protected, even with the change in relative humidity. Don’t take anything to chance. And remember, cigars are an expensive investment and as such should be accorded the proper care that they deserve.
